My name is Rebecca Wartell and I am a scholar of early modern Jewish history who mostly thinks about life in the sixteenth-century Mediterranean. I am currently finishing my first book, tentatively titled Convictions: Jewish Women, Conversion, and the Early Modern Inquisition. My research looks at historical encounters between Jews, Christians, and Muslims, and I am especially interested in themes of conversion and forced migration.
I have extensive experience in higher education, having taught at several institutions including the University of Colorado at Boulder, Regis University, and the University of Denver. I have a Masters in Theological Studies from Harvard University and a PhD in History from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. Since 2024, I am assistant professor and chair of Jewish Studies at Earlham College.
